The river and a cluster of hidden gems down Durham’s cobbled streets make this a pretty and romantic place to take a date. Image via Markpeate on Flickr.
1. Durham Castle
Who doesn’t like a castle? And being taken to a castle on a date is surely the ultimate idea in a town as steeped in history as this. You can take a 45-minute tour which includes the creaking 17th-century Black Staircase and a look at the Norman Chapel. Parts of the Castle are used for the University and visitors can also stay here – perfect for an extravagant fourth or fifth date.
2. Prince Bishop River Cruiser
The River Wear winds its way through central Durham through the trees, and from Easter until early October you can hop on the Prince Bishop River Cruiser for a one-hour trip along it. Take in the views of the race course, the Old Fulling Mill and Durham Cathedral towering above you.
3. Ghost Walk
If you’re looking for something really unique and memorable then a ghost walk has to tick the boxes. The walks take place at night to ensure prime spooking time, and takes in the horrid histories behind Durham’s oldest pubs, bridges and churches. A mass murderer used to walk the streets of Durham but the highlight of these tours are the stories that come with Durham Cathedral, a building said to be filled with ghosts and ghouls.
4. Tea and Art at Cotton
This tiny tea room come art gallery come vintage shop is hard to find, but don’t give up because down a set of steps on Silver Street this family-run place serves up some tasty home-made lunch, nibbles and cakes and is handily located very close to the river, for an after-lunch stroll.
5. Covered Market
The covered market is one of Durham’s best-loved gems, with all kinds of traders taking up residence under the striped canopies. Some have been trading for over 60 years and are well-known characters in the city. Perusing the various brickerbrack and food haunts here is a nice way to while away the afternoon. Afterwards head to nearby Saddler Street where La Spaghettata restaurant is on hand with authentic Italian food in a traditional setting. It’s been here for 16 years and the service and atmosphere is top notch.
6. Oriental Museum
Culture lovers will enjoy an afternoon spent at the Oriental Museum and botanical gardens nearby. The museum is a dedication to the art and archaeology of the orient, covering Egypt and China extensively. On the outskirts of the city the botanical gardens offer craft courses and coffee, or simply a stroll through the gardens.
7. Durham Cathedral
It is said that the best place to view the cathedral is on the train into Durham, but crossing over the wear and Framwellgate bridge is also a pretty special spot to see this magnificent building peering through the forest. Incidentally the bridge is the oldest in Durham, and although it’s been doubled in size to allow for traffic, it still offers one of the most authentic views of the city as it used to be.
