The Pros and Cons of Dating a Personal Trainer

Open any gossip magazine and you’re likely to find a story about a celebrity who is dating a personal trainer or fitness guru. Swedish Crown Princess Victoria married her personal trainer and Madonna is rumoured to still be on good terms with her ex-boyfriend and trainer Carlos Leon who fathered her daughter Lourdes (the pair are often photographed jogging and continue to train together.) However, can dating a personal trainer work out in real life? Whether they’re your trainer, or you’re just dating someone who is really into fitness, there are certain things you should be aware of.

Based on my own experiences, here are a few of the pros and cons of dating a personal trainer or someone heavily involved in fitness:

Pro – Personal trainers and fitness fanatics are generally really motivated and goal orientated. This motivation can rub off on you. Seeing how much time and commitment they put into their own body can inspire you to do the same.

Con – Sometimes you just want to lay on the couch and eat ice cream right out of the container while watching bad reality TV. Dating a personal trainer means you’ll definitely think twice about doing this. This is only a con if you allow yourself to feel guilty & bad about yourself (after all, we all deserve a night off, right?)

Pro – They have a fantastic body. There I said it.

Con – Even if they love you just the way you are, if you’re not at the same fitness level and are prone to body image issues, their amazing abs can breed insecurities if you’re not careful.

Pro – If you are looking to get more fit, they are always there to give you tips on how to get the most out of your workouts and eat healthy. They’ll also push you to always do your best.

Con: Their job is to push people to help them achieve their goals. This means that they won’t let you slack off. This only becomes a con if the person you’re dating doesn’t understand your own personal limits.

Pro: Did I mention they have a nice body?

Con: Their lifestyle might be drastically different from yours. For example, when it comes to date nights they might have to wrap things up early because they have a 6 am bootcamp class or an early morning client scheduled. Also, they drink things out of a blender that you’d never think to drink in liquid form.

Pro: Hopefully some of their healthy living habits will rub off on you and you’ll be able to find a satisfying balance.
